Where are we testing?
We are
currently testing water quality at 13 sites:
Cold Creek
Hidden Valley
Liberty Canyon
Lindero Creek (2 sites)
Las Virgenes (2 sites)
Malibu Creek
Medea Creek (2 sites)
Potrero Creek
Russell Creek
Triunfo Creek

Cold Creek
|

Cold
Creek is a very small creek used as a reference site for the
project. The site is spring fed.

Hidden Valley
|

Agricultural, equestrian, and ranch land up stream of where
the wash meets Sherwood Lake. Hidden Valley Wash substrate
is comprised mostly of silt. There were some invertebrates
and vertebrates found at sampling site.

Liberty Canyon
|

The sampling site at Liberty Canyon Creek is a small
concrete channel that flows through residential areas. Due
to channeling of the creek there is little or no vegetation
growing on the banks or the creek itself. There is however
some patches of vegetation growing in cracks in the concrete
channel. The stream bottom is thinly coated with algae.

Lindero Creek
|

Lindero Creek 1 is a small
creek that runs through property owned and managed by the
Lindero Country Club, while the upper reach runs through residential
areas. Portions of the creek along the golf course are
concrete lined, which changes to soft creek bottom just
before the sampling site. The creek
continues down through the golf course, crosses
Thousand Oaks Blvd and eventually flows into Lake
Lindero. Stream-side and in-stream vegetation consist of
Cattails and Willows. During dryer months the stream may not be
visible due to overgrowth of vegetation.

Lindero Creek 2 flows from a concrete ramp
off Lake Lindero Dam, which continues into a concrete lined
channel. The creek eventually flows into an underground
tunnel where it meets Medea Creek. The creek is
lacking in vegetation due to concrete channeling of the
system. There is however, some vegetation growing in
the sedimentation but the channel bottom is covered mostly
with algae.

Las Virgenes
|

The Las Virgenes Creek 1
sampling site is located where natural riparian and stream
substrate make a transition to concrete channeling. The
stream substrate contains algae covered sediment and silt.
Bank stabilization is very poor in the immediate sample
site.

At Las Virgenes 2 the stream
has a natural low gradient with a sandy
rock gravel substrate. The stream contains some undercutting
and shallow gravel beds with a good canopy cover. Aquatic
invertebrates were found to be abundant at this
sampling site. Trash was found on the banks on all sampling
events.

Malibu Creek
|

Malibu Creek is the catch point of all drainage in the
watershed. The creek contains a good mixture of sand,
gravel, large rocks and boulders. The banks are heavily vegetated with willows
and cottonwoods, as well as exotic
species. No in-stream vegetation is found at the site other
than algae.

Medea Creek
|

The sample site at Medea Creek 1 is a concrete channel
which runs through a residential area.
The majority of the creek is left natural but portions (areas that flow under road bridges) are concrete
lined. Portions of the creek banks are left natural but some
walls of the creek were reinforced with rock and
concrete riprap. The banks contain natural and introduced plant
species. Cattails and Willows can be found growing along the
stream bank. Algae is often in abundance, floating on the
surface of the stream, on submerged rocks and on the
substrate. Trash lines the bank of the streams at and around
the sample area.

Medea Creek 2 is a moderate size stream that flows into
Malibou Lake. The stream is a natural low gradient with sand, rock gravel mix and large rocks. The stream
contains undercutting, good canopy cover, a variation
of runs, riffles and pools, and shallow gravel beds, which
is near pristine conditions for aquatic invertebrates which
are found
in abundance at the site.

Potrero Creek
|

Potrero Creek is a concrete lined channel
that flows into the Westlake Lake. This
site is only monitored after substantial rainfall due to
lack of flow most of the year.

Russell Creek
|

Russell Creek is a small concrete channel that flows through
commercial and residential areas along Lindero Canyon Road. Due to
the concrete channeling of the creek,
there is little or no vegetation growing on the banks and
the stream bottom is covered or matted in algae. Due to the
location of the creek trash is consistently found in stream and along the upper banks.

Triunfo Creek
|

Triunfo Creek is a moderately sized creek which flows from
Westlake Lake over the dam. The creek bed may seem to appear natural but
is actually a boulder and concrete lined bed which is
now covered with natural rocky substrate. Triunfo Creek
receives runoff from Westlake Lake upstream of the sample
site. Triunfo Creek and its banks contain diverse species
of plants and animals which includes native and exotic
invasive species. Native and non-native trees also line the
banks of the creek, providing excellent shade, cooling and
bank stability.
